The most common type of brain worm is cysticercosis or encephalitozoonosis, which can be diffuse or focal in different parts of the brain. Patients may have aphasia, hemiparesis of one limb, seizures, psychiatric symptoms, memory loss, and unresponsiveness with cognitive decline in some patients with cortical cysticercosis. If the cysticercosis is active, it can easily cause obstructive hydrocephalus, and the patient will have severe headache, nausea, vomiting, and in severe cases, coma and even impaired consciousness. Some patients with extensive cysticercosis may also develop cranial edema and require dehydration to lower intracranial pressure.
