In gastrointestinal surgery clinics, it is often necessary to perform gastroenteroscopy on patients to make some definitive or exclusionary diagnoses. Recently in the clinic, many patients asked for painless gastroscopy enteroscopy
But I recommended them to do conventional gastroscopy. Which one is better to do? I will give you my opinion. What are the advantages of painless gastroscopy and enteroscopy compared with traditional gastroscopy and enteroscopy? The main difference between painless gastroscopy and conventional gastroscopy is that the former usually gives the patient a certain amount of intravenous anesthesia, so that the patient can complete the whole examination and treatment process in a painless state. Therefore, the biggest advantage of painless gastroscopy is that it eliminates the patient’s panic and pain during the examination, the patient’s compliance is better, and the doctor is more comfortable and comprehensive during the examination. This is why a considerable number of patients want to have painless gastroscopy. Are there any disadvantages of painless gastroscopy? There is also some academic controversy about painless gastroscopy. Some scholars believe that painless gastroenteroscopy eliminates the patient’s pain and also eliminates the patient’s pain feedback, while traditional general gastroenteroscopy also applies local anesthetic and lubricant to the body of the mirror, which is mostly tolerated by patients, so traditional or general gastroenteroscopy cannot be interpreted as “painful”; in traditional gastroenteroscopy, if painful discomfort occurs during the examination, it may indicate that the doctor is in pain. Therefore, painless colonoscopy under anesthesia may increase the risk of perforation and other risks to the patient, which requires more technical experience of the doctor. At the same time, if the patient has cardiovascular disease, there may be a certain risk of anesthesia due to the need of anesthesia. Third, how do we choose? From the perspective of gastrointestinal surgeons, in most cases, it is more recommended to do traditional general gastroscopy enteroscopy. This is because if a patient is found to have dark red blood, black blood, frequent stools, change in stool habits, abdominal masses and elevated tumor markers in the outpatient clinic, it may indicate that the patient has stomach or intestinal cancer, and a definitive diagnosis, exclusion diagnosis and corresponding treatment should be made as soon as possible. However, compared with general gastroscopy, painless gastroscopy requires anesthesia and awakening process, which requires high skills and experience of doctors, and the number of patients that can be performed per day is low, so in most hospitals, the appointment time for painless gastroscopy is relatively long, while the appointment for general gastroscopy is much faster. Of course, if you are looking for an annual checkup, both examination methods are available.
