How long can you live with atrophic gastritis?

Atrophic is a disease characterized by atrophy of the epithelium and glands of the gastric mucosa, a decrease in number, thinning of the gastric mucosa, thickening of the mucosal base, or with pyloric glandular hyperplasia and intestinal glandular hyperplasia, and also atypical hyperplasia. It does not usually affect the life expectancy of patients, so there are no specific clinical data. One of its causative factors is H. pylori. When H. pylori enters the stomach through the mouth, part of it will be killed by gastric acid, and part of it attaches to the mucus layer of the gastric sinus, settles in the mucus layer on the surface of the mucosal epithelial cells of the gastric sinus, and generally does not invade the gastric glands and within the lamina propria. The urease produced by H. pylori can decompose urea, and the ammonia produced can neutralize the gastric acid that re-infiltrates into the mucus, forming a local microenvironment conducive to the settlement and reproduction of H. pylori, making the infection chronic. There are also dietary factors, high salt diet pickled foods contain high levels of nitrite, which can lead to atrophic gastritis, in addition to bile reflux, drug stimulation, alcohol consumption, immune factors, physical factors, genetics and other factors can also lead to the appearance of the disease. If these causative factors are eliminated in a timely manner, atrophic gastritis is generally not life-threatening. When the lesion extends to the deeper part of the gland, the gland is destroyed, the number is reduced, the lamina propria is fibrotic, and the mucosa becomes thin. The risk of developing gastric cancer increases with multifocal atrophy centered on the gastric horn and spreading to the gastric sinus and body, but the overall chance of cancer is not high. Therefore, there is no clinical data on how long can patients live with atrophic gastritis, but it is very important to prevent the risk of cancer, so standardized treatment and prevention is very important.
