Insomnia is the most common clinical symptom, which manifests itself as difficulty in falling asleep, difficulty in maintaining a sound sleep and inability to regain energy and strength after waking up, thus affecting the social function during the day. The survey conducted in March 2002 on the International Sleep Day showed that 45.4% of the general population in China had insomnia problems. Insomnia has a serious impact on people’s life, work, physical and mental health, as well as on their sick leave, accidental injuries, accidents, reduced work efficiency and productivity, etc. It has a significant negative impact on families and society. In particular, the incidence of depressive psychological disorders has increased dramatically, and many of these patients have insomnia as their prominent complaint, which is mostly treated as primary insomnia and “untreated”, and many of them have serious consequences, for example, many famous people at home and abroad have committed suicide because they could not stand the untreated “chronic For example, many famous people at home and abroad committed suicide because they could not bear the untreated “chronic insomnia”. Insomnia is not only harmful to health, but also to family and society, so insomnia is not only a medical problem, but also a social problem. From the current clinical status of insomnia treatment, there are many problems. The above survey results show that the countermeasures taken for insomnia in the general population in China are: taking sleeping pills 33.4%, drinking less tea and coffee 32.9%, seeing a doctor 22.3%, drinking Chinese medicine 14.5%, and drinking alcohol 13.1%. Among the individuals who took hypnotic drugs, their medication status was: 23.2% recommended by family and friends, 49.5% prescribed by doctors, and 27.3% by other means. The overall satisfaction of these patients with their current insomnia treatment was only 45.9%. From a medical point of view, the above data show that most of the measures taken by the general population in China for insomnia are incorrect, and in the small number of patients taking medication, the sources and routes of information on the choice of medication are not normal. This inevitably leads to poor objective treatment results, reduced subjective satisfaction and increased incidence of unexpected situations. The reasons for this state of affairs are manifold. First of all, in terms of the popularization and improvement of knowledge about sleep disorders and sleep hygiene, both among the public and the medical community itself need to be further strengthened, not only by those engaged in basic and clinical research in sleep medicine, but also by the attention and support of all aspects of society, especially government departments. Because sleep medicine is different from other disciplines, its uniqueness and importance lies in the fact that sleep disorders are not only a personal health problem, but often bring harm to society, such as the tragic space shuttle explosion and the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant accident, both caused by the lack of sleep of the people involved. A survey in Shanghai revealed that 35% of car accidents occurred due to sleep deprivation of drivers, and there are numerous cases of sleep deprivation due to work or environment that caused serious consequences to society. With the development and progress of society, the popularization of scientific and cultural knowledge and the improvement of quality of life, people’s demand for sleep quality has gradually increased, and more and more patients are coming forward to seek medical advice because of various sleep problems. There is an urgent need to vigorously train professionals in sleep medicine, carry out basic and clinical research work in sleep medicine, and conduct universal sleep health promotion and education. It is necessary to offer sleep medicine courses in universities, sleep disorder clinics and sleep laboratories in hospitals to help promote the development of sleep medicine and meet the growing needs.
