What is idiopathic edema?

Idiopathic edema is edema for which no specific cause can be found with the current state of medical care. If a patient develops edema, the more common causes should first be ruled out. Those that can cause systemic edema include nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, heart failure, liver cirrhosis, hypothyroidism, etc. The main causes of local edema are deep vein thrombosis, lower limb venous valve insufficiency, etc. When the above common causes are ruled out by perfect urine routine, liver and kidney function, thyroid function, cardiac ultrasound and vascular ultrasound of both lower extremities, then the edema can be considered as idiopathic edema. Once the diagnosis of idiopathic edema is made, there is no special treatment, only symptomatic treatment is required. If the edema is obvious, diuretic drugs such as hydrochlorothiazide, spironolactone, and furosemide tablets can be used. The other thing is to elevate the affected limb to promote reflux, avoid strenuous exercise, avoid straining and so on.
