How long does Guillain Barre live?

The survival time of most patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome is generally unaffected; however, patients with severe disease, older age, and poor physical condition, who have rapidly progressing disease and require assisted breathing, or who are bedridden for a long period of time often have a poor prognosis and their life expectancy is affected, such as those with involvement of respiratory muscles or bulbar palsy, or those with severe autonomic dysfunction may die at any time in the acute phase. Guillain-Barré syndrome is a peripheral neuropathy caused by autoimmunity, mainly damaging the spinal cord nerves and peripheral nerves, and is characterized by an acute onset, with symptoms peaking in about 2 weeks and a history of infection 1-3 weeks before the disease. The main manifestation is symmetrical delayed paralysis of the limbs, often starting from both lower limbs and gradually involving the trunk and cerebral nerves, while patients may be accompanied by abnormal sensation of the extremities, such as burning sensation, numbness, glove-glove-like distribution; some patients may have skin flushing, increased sweating and other autonomic dysfunction. In milder cases, normal life expectancy is usually not affected after active treatment. However, if the disease is severe, some patients may develop respiratory impairment during the acute phase of the disease, which may be life-threatening at any time if not corrected in time. If the patient is tetraplegic after the disease and bedridden for a long time, it may also lead to lung infections if care is not taken, which may in turn affect normal life expectancy. In conclusion, the length of life of patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome cannot be generalized, but it is recommended to actively intervene in the early stage of the disease, and if treated properly, it will not leave sequelae and will not affect the normal life expectancy. However, if sequelae appear, care should be strengthened and physical rehabilitation should be carried out under the guidance of a doctor.
