Introduction to chronic suppurative otitis media

Chronic purulent otitis media is, indeed, a common and frequent disease. Most are complicated by secretory otitis media, improperly or incompletely treated. Prior to the 1860s, serious complications often arose as a result of failure to receive prompt antimicrobial therapy. Especially intracranial complications: purulent meningitis, encephalitis, brain abscess, etc.. are often fatal. At the time when this was encountered, surgical treatment was the only method of choice and had saved many patients’ lives. However, the situation nowadays is very different compared with the past. For one thing, the general improvement of the medical condition of the whole population and the popularization of medical insurance can make the patients who are just at risk of otitis media get timely consultation and treatment, and it is very rare to have complications, and it is even more difficult to see the intracranial complication. Therefore, cholesteatoma induced by otitis media is rare, and even fever is rare. As a result, the need for surgery is extremely rare. However, as medical treatment has become commoditized, the need for surgery has been overemphasized in order to maximize profits and meet economic targets. Some even try to hospitalize patients for surgery as soon as they see otitis media. My idea may be contrary to the above. After all, surgery is surgery, and there is always a certain amount of risk. Secondly, surgery does not improve hearing for any otitis media, and not all dry ears can be achieved through surgery; besides, surgical treatment is also a not insignificant medical expense. Over the past 10 years, we have cleaned the ear canal and tympanic chamber of foreign bodies, cholesteatoma-like material in the external auditory canal and diseased tissues under the endoscopic ear, and then given local anti-inflammatory treatment (we have self-manufactured absorbable medicinal powders). In addition to a very small number of patients with surgical needs for special cases, almost all of them are not operated on, and the therapeutic effect is very good, and it is also welcomed by the patients.
