How to improve the survival of advanced pancreatic cancer?

Pancreatic cancer is also known as the king of cancers. The incidence of pancreatic cancer is more common in middle-aged and elderly people, and the incidence is much higher in men than in women. The causes of pancreatic cancer are still unclear, and the risk factors are related to smoking, diabetes, gallstones, alcohol consumption, high-fat diet and chronic pancreatitis. The early symptoms of pancreatic cancer are not obvious, and the late symptoms are related to the location and extent of invasion of the pancreatic cancer mass. If the cancer occurs in the head of the pancreas, the patient mainly presents with jaundice and in most cases no abdominal pain; if it occurs in the body or tail of the pancreas, the patient is often seen for abdominal pain radiating to the lower back and an abdominal mass. Other advanced symptoms of pancreatic cancer include emaciation, poor appetite, nausea, vomiting, weakness, and even cachexia. The survival of patients with advanced pancreatic cancer depends mainly on the proper treatment and the patient’s physical function. The most important factor that determines how long a patient can live with advanced pancreatic cancer is a reasonable treatment plan. Since most of the advanced pancreatic cancers have lost the chance of surgical resection, the main palliative treatment methods are radiotherapy, local thermal ablation and biological treatment. Pancreatic cancer is not sensitive to radiotherapy, while local thermal ablation combined with biological therapy can improve immune function in addition to directly removing cancerous tissues. At present, as new treatments, especially high-energy ultrasound, are increasingly used in the treatment of advanced pancreatic cancer, the survival of patients with advanced pancreatic cancer has been significantly improved. The improvement of the patient’s physical function is also an important factor in how long the patient can live with advanced pancreatic cancer. A good body function and strong immune system can resist the development of tumor and tolerate all kinds of drug treatment. Therefore, it is extremely important for patients with advanced pancreatic cancer to improve their immune function and strengthen their resistance to tumors. Patients with advanced pancreatic cancer should maintain an optimistic attitude and actively cooperate with the treatment. In terms of diet, pancreatic cancer patients should avoid greasy and high-fat foods and should eat more foods with anti-cancer and pain-relieving effects, such as walnuts, bitter melon and malt.
