“Early Screening, Keep Your Mouth Shut, Keep Your Legs Moving” – Keeping Diabetes Away

With the improvement of people’s living standard and the “westernized” change of lifestyle, the incidence of type 2 diabetes in China is increasing year by year. According to the latest survey, the prevalence of diabetes among men and women over 20 years of age in China reached 10.6% and 8.8% respectively, and the overall prevalence rate has reached 9.7%, while the prevalence rate of pre-diabetic people, who are candidates for diabetes, is as high as 15.5%. More than 148 million people are pre-diabetic. If diabetes is not prevented and controlled, it will have a serious impact on China’s economy and people’s health. Therefore, the prevention of diabetes has become an urgent task. Type 2 diabetes is not only treatable, but also preventable. If you can do “early screening, control your mouth, and open your legs” in daily life, you can keep away from type 2 diabetes. 1. Early screening of people at risk for diabetes If you meet some of the following conditions, you belong to a group of people at risk for diabetes: impaired glucose regulation; obesity; age 45 or older; family history of diabetes; dyslipidemia; hypertension; women who have a history of giving birth to a large child or have had abnormal blood sugar during pregnancy. Of these, impaired glucose regulation is the most important group at risk for type 2 diabetes. Impaired glucose regulation is a blood glucose state between normal and diabetic, and every year a certain percentage of patients with impaired glucose regulation will join the ranks of type 2 diabetes. Therefore, it is important to screen people at high risk for diabetes early, and not to wait until symptoms of diabetes such as dry mouth and lethargy appear before thinking about going to the hospital for screening. The recommended screening test is the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). If it is difficult to perform the OGTT, fasting blood glucose and 2-hour postprandial blood glucose can also be monitored. If the screening result is normal, the test is repeated after 3 years. For patients with clearly impaired glucose regulation, lifestyle interventions should be started immediately and pharmacological interventions can be performed if necessary to avoid conversion to type 2 diabetes. 2. Adhere to appropriate physical activity Adhering to regular physical activity such as jogging, swimming, etc. is beneficial in preventing the occurrence of diabetes. Physical exercise not only can reduce your weight, but also can increase the body’s sensitivity to insulin. It is now clear that obesity is a high risk factor for the development of type 2 diabetes, so losing weight through exercise can reduce the chances of diabetes. Insulin is a hormone that lowers blood sugar in the body, when the body’s insulin ability to lower blood sugar decreases, that is, the so-called “insulin resistance” will occur, and insulin resistance is also an important mechanism for the development of diabetes, and exercise can reduce insulin resistance, thus helping to prevent the occurrence of diabetes. 3, choose a healthy diet structure In order to effectively prevent diabetes, in the daily diet to pay attention to the following aspects: First of all, to ensure a certain daily intake of coarse grains. Promote the consumption of cereals with low sugar content such as various coarse foods, and avoid or reduce the consumption of foods with high sugar content. The second is to ensure adequate intake of dietary fiber. High-fiber foods such as vegetables and coarse grains can increase the feeling of satiety, thus reducing the amount of food eaten, which is conducive to weight control. Third, control the daily intake of fat. Strictly limit the consumption of animal offal, egg yolk, crab yolk and other foods rich in fat and high cholesterol, and avoid all kinds of fried foods. Finally, stay away from tobacco and drink alcohol in moderation or not.
