I have encountered many patients with herniated lumbar discs in my practice, whose symptoms are relieved after conservative treatment, but then relapse after some time. They are often puzzled as to why this is so. Studies have proven that most patients with mild to moderate lumbar disc herniation can be relieved for a longer period of time with conservative treatment, but why do people still experience recurrence? According to our research, there are several reasons: 1. the degree of lumbar disc herniation is serious and the compression of nerves is obvious; 2. the lumbar disc herniation combined with spinal stenosis, so that the compressed nerves have little space to buffer, and the symptoms of leg pain and leg numbness will be immediate with a small stimulus. The spinal stenosis may be caused by congenital development or by acquired degeneration and aging; 3, lumbar disc herniation combined with lumbar spine loosening instability, this type is often prone to lumbar small joint sprains, prone to recurrent episodes of lumbar pain; 4, some patients, after conservative treatment for symptom relief, still often sedentary, bending back to bear weight. Research has proven that these two actions are the most impact on the lumbar spine. Sitting for a long time will increase the pressure within the lumbar intervertebral disc and will affect the nutrient metabolism of the lumbar intervertebral disc. It is recommended that after sitting for an hour, you should get up to do stretching exercises, which have a protective effect on the intervertebral discs. When bending over to bear weight, it may lead to increased disc tearing and protrusion and cause lumbar sprain, so it also needs to be avoided as much as possible. If you must bear weight, you should squat and use the power of your knees and hips to get up, which will avoid the power being concentrated on the waist; 5. Too little exercise is also a cause of recurrent symptoms. It is recommended that patients should strengthen their exercise during the symptom relief period, such as aerobic exercises like swimming. If you are exercising at home, we recommend the Feiyan dotted water lumbar back muscle exercise.
