The number of days of recuperation at home for removal of gallstones depends on the surgical procedure and the individual patient’s condition, and should be analyzed on a case-by-case basis, not as a generalization. If the patient has only gallstones, no other physical discomfort and no underlying disease, the recovery time for traditional open surgery is longer and usually requires about 2 weeks of rest at home, while minimally invasive lumpectomy can generally be done at home for 1 week. Therefore, if there are no special circumstances, lumpectomy is the recommended choice. If the patient has gallstones with severe inflammation of the gallbladder, or even septicemia, gangrene, or perforation; or if there is an underlying disease, open surgery is required, and postoperative rest is usually required at home for 3 weeks or more to recover. During the recovery period after gallstone surgery, patients are advised to avoid spicy, stimulating and greasy foods, and are advised to eat more vegetables and fruits, and more high-protein, low-fat foods to promote wound healing.
