When nail infections are delayed and not treated in a timely manner, they can develop into purulent phalangitis and eventually lead to osteomyelitis of the finger (toe) bone as the condition progresses. When the body’s resistance and immunity are reduced or there is a skin defect, bacteria can easily invade and grow under the skin, resulting in pain, redness and swelling around the nail, and therefore causing inflammation of the nail groove. Nail fungus is a common inflammatory disease that affects the quality of life of patients due to ingrown nails, puncture wounds, and abrasions in or around the nail groove. It is a common outpatient disease caused by improper nail trimming or uncomfortable shoe wear. The specific cause is infection of the skin at the nail groove leading to nail infection. Some patients can apply local iodophor to deal with the disease, but the later recurrence rate is relatively high. Total finger (toe) nail extraction, partial finger (toe) nail extraction and partial nail bed excision are the main methods of clinical treatment of ingrown nail infection at present.
