The China Blood Stem Cell Donor Database (hereinafter referred to as the “Chinese Bone Marrow Bank”), abbreviated as CMDP. In 2001, with the support of relevant government departments, the Chinese Red Cross restarted the work of building the database. In December of the same year, the Central Editorial Office approved the establishment of the China Blood Stem Cell Donor Database Management Center to unify the management and standardization of the promotion, organization and mobilization of volunteer donors, HLA (leukocyte antigen) typing, retrieval of matched donors for patients and transplantation-related services.
Due to the prevalence of one-child families in China, matched sibling donors are increasingly difficult to obtain. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation has been carried out since 1986, and now nearly 200 transplants are carried out each year. However, in recent years, fewer and fewer transplant patients under the age of 35 are able to undergo HSCT with a matched sibling donor. Therefore, future allogeneic HSCTs will increasingly rely on finding suitable donors among unrelated donors. Therefore, it is essential to establish a database of Chinese HSC donors, and the more volunteers participate, the larger the capacity of the bank, the better the chances of finding compatible donors for patients and the better the chances of survival. As of June 30, 2014, China’s blood stem cell donor database (Chinese bone marrow bank) had a total capacity of 1853,502 people, with 4,271 cumulative blood stem cell donations and 38,767 patient applications for inquiries.
