No one likes needles, but they are a necessary part of our lives. Children need shots for vaccinations, blood tests and for some routine medical care. However, many children have a fear of needles. So, what can parents do to help their children stop being afraid of needles? 1. Use emotional guidance Emotional guidance is the acceptance and naming of children’s feelings. Parents need to acknowledge that they know their children are very afraid of needles and not say things that discourage them because they are afraid of needles. Or deliberately trivialize the issue of needles. 2. Be careful not to exacerbate children’s fear of needles Parents should avoid not to exacerbate children’s fear of needles, if there is not absolutely nothing they can do about it. Do not show too much interest in children’s fears. Parents just need to intervene briefly and tell the children how the matter is in a low-key way. 3. Try some simple methods first If parents give their children something they like, then the children may accept the shot, and if this method is effective, then the parents can try it. Also, parents can distract their children by telling them jokes or other methods while they are getting their shots. 4. Teach children ways to overcome their fears Parents can teach children how to use their imagination to help them stay calm and confident during the injection. When children are getting their shots, parents can ask them to imagine that they will be able to leave with a lollipop after the shot. 5. Children who are afraid of needles may be afraid of needles The reason children are afraid of needles is most likely because they have had some bad experiences with them. Therefore, if the children are very upset during the injection and do not cooperate with the doctor at all, then the children may have a phobia of needles. For the parents this may be nothing, but children who are very fiercely resistant may still need some medical attention. 6. Bach flower treatment Bach flower extract is safe and harmless for children, and the extract helps to relieve children’s intense emotions. Therefore, when children are very emotional during the injection, parents can try to put two drops of Bach flower extract in the water the child drinks four times a day until the child no longer has intense emotions. 7. Professional evaluation and treatment If none of the above methods work, then the parents may need to take the child for some psychotherapy. Short-term psychotherapy can soon help children overcome their fear of needles.
