Mental illness must be maintained for treatment to prevent relapse

Many patients have recently relapsed from their original illnesses because of premature discontinuation of medication. Most mental illnesses are chronic diseases, just like chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes, and require maintenance medication. The duration of maintenance treatment for mental illness depends on many factors, including the characteristics of the patient’s illness, family history, personality traits, the effectiveness of treatment, and the number of relapses. Generally speaking, patients with more relapses require longer maintenance treatment. Therefore, it is crucial to prevent recurrence of the disease, which is often referred to as letting the disease go to its roots. From the current point of view, the key issue of relapse prevention is the maintenance of treatment. Therefore, patients are reminded to adhere to the maintenance treatment and not to stop the medication too early. Finally, patients are advised to keep in frequent contact with their doctors and use their medication under their guidance.
