What to do if you have vertebral hemangioma

Vertebral hemangiomas are discovered in most patients during a physical examination, and in a small percentage of patients when they go to the hospital for examination after developing symptoms. Vertebral hemangiomas can be left untreated if there are no obvious clinical symptoms. If symptoms appear, they can be treated in two ways. One, bone cement can be injected into the hemangioma tissue through orthopedic surgery to restore vertebral body solidity and instead allow for symptom relief. Second, radiation therapy can be used to shrink the sinusoidal tissue within the hemangioma and cause the blood within the vessel to clot into a thrombus, which can also restore vertebral stability and provide symptom relief through late fibrosis.
