Simple goiter refers to an enlarged thyroid gland with normal thyroid function. The common cause is iodine deficiency or some cause of iodine intake malfunction resulting in compensatory goiter, but the thyroid function is normal at this time, so it can also be called a non-toxic goiter. Most patients with simple goiter have no obvious clinical symptoms or discomfort and do not require additional treatment. If the enlarged thyroid gland is pressing on the surrounding organs and causing symptoms, treatment may be required, such as surgery or treatment with some radioactive elements.
