Symptoms of early stage laryngeal cancer

  1. Stubborn hoarseness Laryngeal cancer most often involves the vocal cords, and even if the volume is small, hoarseness will appear. Hoarseness is the earliest sign of laryngeal cancer. Any adult with unexplained hoarseness that lasts for more than two weeks should have a detailed laryngeal examination and should not be taken lightly. Because there is no pain or itch at this time, patients often mistake it for “cold” or “laryngitis”. However, the hoarseness caused by cold and inflammation will improve quickly as the inflammation subsides, while the hoarseness caused by laryngeal cancer will be progressively aggravated and gradually develop into thickening and mute voice until complete loss of voice. 2. Abnormal sensation of throat Foreign body sensation, urgency or swallowing discomfort are early symptoms of supraglottic laryngeal cancer. However, the symptoms of this type of cancer are often not obvious at the beginning and are not detected until the second or third stage, and the medical history can be traced for several months. Therefore, if middle-aged and elderly people have throat discomfort, they should have a comprehensive and detailed examination, and should not be treated hastily as pharyngeal heterosensitivity or chronic pharyngitis, thus missing the valuable treatment time. 3.Cough with blood in sputum Because of tumor stimulation, it can produce irritating dry cough and blood in sputum, and patients often have the feeling of mucus adhesion, so they often “wash their throat”. After the tumor enlarges, it will also block the airway and make the airway secretion discharge poorly, causing respiratory tract infection, wheezing and even difficulty in breathing, and in the middle and late stages, it will manifest as persistent cough and change in pronunciation. 4.Reflex pain sensation When laryngeal cancer is combined with ulcer, inflammation or laryngeal cartilage osteochondritis, it can cause reflex pain of nerve, which is manifested as ipsilateral headache and ear pain. These symptoms mainly appear in patients with supraglottic type tumor. 5. Neck swelling Some supraglottic laryngeal cancers can develop lymph node metastasis in the neck and neck swelling in early stage. According to current knowledge, the occurrence of laryngeal cancer is greatly related to smoking, and the incidence of laryngeal cancer in smokers is significantly higher than that in non-smokers. Therefore, in order to prevent the occurrence of laryngeal cancer, smokers are advised to quit smoking.
