Polio is primarily a highly contagious disease caused by the wild-type polio virus.
The virus attacks the nervous system and the paralytic form of polio damages motor neuron cells in the anterior horn of the spinal cord, producing bradykinetic paralysis of the limbs and, in severe cases, death from respiratory muscle paralysis.
There is no effective treatment for the disease and vaccination is the only effective preventive measure.
