Possible problems with wearing a brace and how to deal with them in a child with scoliosis in summer

In the summer, it is the most difficult time for children with scoliosis to endure. Not only do they have to endure the heat, but they also have to hide the brace from others as much as possible. But for us doctors, the most important concern is the skin, because it is hot and sweaty, and the skin is prone to pressure sores under pressure, and if this happens, it is estimated that the brace cannot be worn for 3 or 4 weeks, and the orthopedic effect of a long time may bounce back, and may be aggravated in children with growth spurts. Therefore, here are some requirements to avoid serious skin problems and spend the summer easily. 1.Shower every day to keep the skin clean. 2, use alcohol to massage the pelvic area and the skin of the pressure surface area, so as to increase the tolerance of the skin. Keep massaging until the skin is well tolerated. 3.Often observe the color of the skin. Normally after wearing the orthotic for a period of time and removing it, the skin at the pressure point should be cherry red and recover naturally within 30 minutes. If the skin is still red after 30 minutes, the orthotic should be adjusted promptly. 4. Wear a close-fitting, unbuttoned cotton garment underneath the brace. The length of the garment should exceed the length of the orthotic. When you sweat a lot, you can change your clothes once every half day. 5. The brace should be tied as tightly as possible to avoid abrasion of the skin. Especially in the pressure point position, clothes should not appear folded. 6.It is best to put some powdered skin care products (such as prickly heat powder) inside the brace or on the body on hot days, and rub alcohol on the skin that is sensitive to the powder. Do not use oily skin care products, so as not to cause damage to the skin. 7.When the skin breaks out (severe pain, excessive redness, bruising, purple), do not wear the support first, and handle it under the guidance of our doctor after the follow-up consultation, and wear it again after the skin gets better. 8. The brace is made of polyethylene plastic, so you can wipe it with a towel to keep it clean. After wearing orthotics for a period of time, the skin of the pelvic area and pressure areas will appear pigmentation, which is a normal phenomenon and will recover naturally when the treatment is over.
