In outpatient clinics, patients often complain of constipation. There are those who do not have a bowel movement for several days or a week and have to use laxatives or corkage in order to have a bowel movement; there are also those who have a bowel movement once every two or three days but with a dry texture; and there are also those who have a line every day and have a moderate quality of stool but are not smooth. Upon closer examination of the symptoms, most of these patients can be included in the category of “habitual constipation” in Western medicine. According to the definition of Western medicine, habitual constipation can also be called functional constipation, refers to defecation less than 3 times a week, or defecation often feel difficult. The main reasons include: 1, eat too little or food is too fine, the colon because of the lack of a certain amount of fiber stimulation and peristalsis weak resulting in constipation; 2, because of the reason can not defecate in a timely manner, the accumulation of feces for too long and produce constipation; 3, because of mental depression or excessive excitement, poor living habits, sleep deprivation, so that the colon peristalsis malfunction or spasm and cause constipation; 4, because of the frequent use of laxatives, so that the rectal reaction is dull and lose Sensitivity and cause constipation. Habitual constipation is mostly seen in the elderly, but the clinic sees a lot of young and middle-aged people. In my personal opinion, diet, bowel habits, and physical factors play a significant role. Many patients can significantly improve their constipation symptoms by going to the supermarket and buying dietary fiber, or eating foods such as sweet potatoes, indicating that there may be problems with their usual diet structure, with too much fine food and relatively little fiber-rich vegetables. In some patients, they are instructed to have regular bowel movements every day, and over time they develop the habit and constipation improves. As for the old and frail or lack of exercise in young and middle-aged people, after strengthening exercise, especially abdominal exercise (including clockwise massage abdomen), also help to improve the symptoms. Many patients with habitual constipation have been ill for a long time and have become dependent on medication, and cannot pass stools without medication. For these patients, the biggest headache is that if a drug is used for a long time, there will be drug resistance, and the dosage must be increased or changed. This is also a true picture of these patients, many of whom “guide” their doctors in the use of drugs. Often the doctor said a certain drug, the patient will be told that certainly not, including Chinese and Western medicines and Chinese herbal tablets are the same. There are also many patients who have worked out their own medicine, food and then exercise combined therapy, this experience is even richer than the doctor, effective. Individual patients with persistent constipation have little effect with various commonly used drugs, so I will give him a prescription, using more often 60g of Atractylodes Macrocephala, 30g of Radix et Rhizoma Atractylodes, and 15g of Shengma, most of which have an effect. In fact, this is also due to the long duration of the disease and the prominent deficiency of Qi and Yin in the spleen and stomach of such patients. However, this kind of remedy cannot be used for a long time, and it is necessary to rely on comprehensive treatment later. Some patients also ask what fruits can help with laxatives, and my recommendations include bananas and dragon fruit.
