What is the condition of cystic echogenicity in the adnexal region?

If an ultrasound examination suggests cystic echogenicity in the adnexal region, it is usually suggestive of ovarian cysts. However, due to the wide variety of pathological types of ovarian cysts, it is not possible to determine which is the specific type and can be temporarily observed or the next step in treatment can be chosen depending on the size of the cyst and the patient’s symptoms. The female adnexal region includes the parametrial tissues, such as the broad ligament, blood vessels, and the mesentery. In addition, it includes the fallopian tubes, ovaries, and various ligaments. Generally, most of the cysts in the adnexal area occur due to the ovaries, while a few are caused by pelvic encapsulated fluid or fluid in the fallopian tubes. Therefore, if ovarian cysts are found, they can be temporarily observed if they are less than 5 cm in size. However, if there are obvious symptoms, even if the volume is smaller or larger than 6 cm, surgery should be performed promptly.
