Multiple mixed thyroid nodules, i.e., coexistence of solid and cystic thyroid nodules, need to be evaluated for malignant risk. Regular follow-up is recommended for benign nodules, and puncture for pathologic examination is required for malignant risk.
Thyroid nodules are masses formed by abnormal proliferation of thyroid cells. They can be categorized into 3 types based on thyroid composition: cystic, solid, and mixed. Mixed nodules include both solid and cystic components. If the nodule has a TI-RADS score of 3 or less, it is considered to be a benign nodule, and it is recommended that the thyroid ultrasound be reviewed regularly every year.
If the thyroid nodule score is grade 4 or above, it is considered to be malignant with a high possibility of malignancy, and thyroid puncture biopsy is needed to clarify the nature.
Patients with multiple mixed thyroid nodules should be treated under medical supervision.
