What is drug rhinitis?

“Drug rhinitis” is a chronic toxic reaction of the nasal mucosa caused by the long-term use of nasal mucosal vasoconstrictors, such as nasal drops and ephedrine nasal drops, so it is also called “toxic rhinitis”. The reason for its occurrence is related to the abuse of nasal drops by patients who do not undergo specialist examination and treatment and purchase their own medication.

Patients with nasal obstruction due to certain reasons (such as cold, allergy, etc.) use vasoconstrictor nasal drops. At first, the effect of nasal ventilation was obvious, but the effect was not good when the medication was continued. If the medication is continued, the nasal obstruction will be aggravated, which is called the phenomenon of multiple use and reduced effect. The use of nasal mucosal vasoconstrictors for rhinitis should not be used for more than a week at a time.

In the treatment of drug rhinitis, first stop using nasal mucosal vasoconstrictors and use saline nasal drops instead. And to exercise, enhance physical fitness, improve body resistance, pay attention to rest, quit smoking and alcohol. It can also be treated by acupuncture to narrow the inferior turbinates and improve nasal ventilation.
