In clinical practice, many patients go to hospital for cough, hemoptysis and chest pain and are diagnosed with lung cancer at an advanced stage. Domestic and foreign data show that 80% of lung cancer patients are already at an advanced stage once they are pathologically diagnosed. Unfortunately, many early stage lung cancer patients do not have any symptoms or the symptoms are so mild that they are not enough to attract patients’ attention, thus missing the opportunity of early diagnosis. Most patients with advanced lung cancer die within one year, while the survival rate of early stage lung cancer can reach 60% to 90% in 5 years after surgery and comprehensive treatment. In fact, early detection of lung cancer is not difficult. Many lung cancers can be detected at an early stage if people who are at high risk of smoking or have symptoms take chest X-ray once a year. Chest X-ray is better and safer than chest fluoroscopy. If abnormalities are found in chest X-ray, further CT examination of chest, tumor cells in sputum and fiberoptic bronchoscopy should be performed if necessary. It is worth mentioning that chest X-ray is not a panacea, some early stage lung cancers do not show abnormalities on chest X-ray and there are some “blind spots”, which should be closely followed up. Chest CT is more effective in detecting peripheral lung lesions than plain chest radiography. The literature reports that low-dose CT is 10 times more sensitive than plain chest radiographs in detecting small nodules in the lungs. Therefore, it has been suggested that smokers older than 60 years of age need annual low-dose spiral CT screening. Percutaneous fine-needle aspiration biopsy is extremely accurate in diagnosing malignant nodules in the lung, with a sensitivity of 70% to 100%, but it is an invasive test and has certain complications, such as pneumothorax and hemoptysis. Special reminder here:
1, the high prevalence of the population – smoking men over 40 years of age with the following symptoms, such as irritating dry cough, blood in the sputum, chest pain, chest tightness, shortness of breath, unexplained wasting, weakness, or chronic bronchitis patients with a change in the nature of the cough, should be alarmed and promptly go to the hospital.
2. muscle weakness, abnormal sensation and joint pain of bone and joint lesions alone also need attention, which may be extra-pulmonary manifestations of lung cancer.
3. recurrent episodes of pneumonia in the same area should be treated early by an experienced chest physician to rule out extra-pulmonary cancer.
4. Do not observe intrapulmonary masses for a long time, seek early consultation with an experienced thoracic surgeon and early puncture or lumpectomy biopsy.
