Why do people suffer from mental illness

I am always asked why a loved one in my family has a mental illness. I would say that mental illnesses are the same as other physical illnesses, they are the result of abnormal changes in the body. Mental abnormalities are closely related to genetics, genetic susceptibility, personality and living environment, as well as to the individual’s physical health and mental state at the time. Usually, people can rely on their own nervous system, endocrine system, immune system and so on to adjust themselves with environmental changes, to achieve a new state of balance, health state. People are very adaptable to environmental changes. The vast majority of individuals do not develop mental illness. However, if an individual has genetic defects, developmental disorders, imperfect regulatory systems, or is stimulated by multiple factors in the psychosocial environment at the same time, the body cannot adjust, the brain will be further damaged and mental illness will appear. Today’s world is the era of information explosion, people enjoy a more convenient life at the same time, subject to a variety of pressure, unprecedented huge. Some researchers say that the stress capacity of human beings to withstand psychosocial environmental stimuli is weakening with the development of human civilization, and the lifetime prevalence of mental illness has now reached 20%. It is urgent to pay attention to mental health.
