What is constipation?

  Constipation is strictly speaking a common symptom of the digestive system, not a disease of the digestive system. It refers to a decrease in the frequency of bowel movements or a feeling of difficulty in passing stools due to a variety of causes. Decreased stool frequency is defined as less than 3 times per week. Difficulty in defecation includes straining to defecate, difficulty in passing stools, feeling of incomplete defecation, time consuming defecation and the need for manual assistance in defecation.      According to Rome III criteria, patients have 2 or more of the following symptoms: 1. at least 25% of bowel movements are strained; 2. at least 25% of bowel movements are lumpy or hard; 3. at least 25% of bowel movements are incomplete; 4. at least 25% of bowel movements are anorectal obstruction and blockage; 5. at least 25% of bowel movements require fingertip assistance; 6. bowel movements are less than 3 times per week. The constipation is rarely loose stools without laxatives, with symptoms occurring 6 months prior to diagnosis and meeting the symptom criteria for the last 3 months. Constipation is usually divided into three types: colonic slow transmission type, outlet obstruction type, mixed type.  2, the principle of constipation treatment: according to the severity of constipation, etiology and type, to take active comprehensive measures and overall treatment, in order to restore normal bowel habits and defecation physiology. Increase dietary fiber intake and water intake, and increase the amount of activity.  ②Adjust the psychological state, eliminate the tension, frequent anal lifting exercises can strengthen the pelvic floor muscles and help to establish a normal defecation reflex.  ③Establish good defecation habits, focus on defecation, avoid reading books or playing with cell phones.  ④Avoid constipation caused by medication as much as possible.  (2) Medication: must be carried out under the guidance of a professional physician. When choosing laxatives, the efficacy, safety and dependence of the drugs should be considered. Laxatives must be selected according to the severity of constipation and the pathophysiological causes of constipation to avoid abuse.  (3) Biofeedback therapy: to correct inappropriate and ineffective defecation actions, restore and establish normal defecation reflex.  (4) Surgical treatment: Only those with poor results after strict non-surgical treatment as mentioned above should consider surgical treatment.
