Murphy’s sign is negative in normal people. Murphy’s sign is when the left hand is pressed to the patient’s right upper abdomen and the thumb is pressed to the gallbladder and the patient is asked to breathe in deeply, the patient will show a bulging stomach. If the patient has gallbladder disease, he or she will experience significant pain when touching the thumb and then stop breathing, which is called a positive Murphy’s sign. Positive patients are most often seen with diseases of the gallbladder, such as acute cholecystitis, gallbladder stone cholecystitis or cholangitis, etc. Patients with abdominal pain, fever, jaundice and other manifestations are advised to seek immediate medical attention. Complete ultrasound of the gallbladder and liver, or CT and other tests, as well as blood tests such as routine blood and C-reactive protein, to further clarify the diagnosis.
