Hyperlipidemia, refers to elevated plasma total cholesterol (TC), elevated low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), elevated triglycerides (TG) and/or reduced high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C). Hyperlipidemia is closely related to the occurrence and development of atherosclerosis, and the cardiovascular diseases caused on this basis are the number one killer of human health. If you are found to have elevated blood lipids during physical examination or atherosclerotic plaques during vascular ultrasound, you must pay attention to it and seek early medical consultation and treatment accordingly. Hyperlipidemia is a disorder of the body’s lipid metabolism, which is considered by Chinese medicine to be caused by the imbalance of qi, blood, yin and yang, so the treatment should focus on “regulating lipids” rather than simply “lowering lipids”. Our population is characterized by high sugar (starch) and low fat diet, therefore, there are more patients with hyper-TGemia and mixed hyperlipidemia, so the treatment should not only focus on lowering TC as the main goal, but also pay attention to the comprehensive lipid regulating measures of lowering TG and increasing HDL-C. However, the combination of lipid-lowering western drugs increases the potential side effects. TCM adopts an individualized treatment model of discriminative treatment for different patients with dyslipidemia in terms of imbalance of qi, blood, yin and yang, and legislates from resolving phlegm, eliminating food, dispelling stasis, tonifying kidney and strengthening spleen, which has good effect on comprehensive regulation of lipid profile, adjuvant treatment to promote lipid compliance and improve clinical symptoms. The Cardiovascular Department of Xiyuan Hospital has always made hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis the focus of its research and has accumulated rich clinical experience, which has won the first prize of science and technology of the Chinese Society of Integrative Medicine. In recent years, based on the systematic summary of the experience of Chinese medicine and combined Chinese and Western medicine in treating hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis, and combining the traditional advantages and characteristics of our department, we have opened a special clinic for “hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis”, which further standardizes the treatment plan and significantly improves the clinical efficacy, and is welcomed by patients from all over the country. For mild dyslipidemia, most of the patients can have significant improvement by adhering to 2-3 months of traditional Chinese medicine treatment on the basis of improving lifestyle, and continuing to adhere to traditional Chinese medicine tea drink can maintain the lipid level; for patients with obvious elevation of lipid, the combination of Chinese and Western medicine treatment can further promote the lipid level and reduce clinical symptoms such as dizziness, sleepiness, chest tightness, limb numbness and weakness; for patients with high lipid level who cannot tolerate western medicine (abnormal liver function or muscle pain after taking western medicine), the treatment can help them to achieve the standard. For patients with hyperlipidemia who cannot tolerate western medicine (abnormal liver function or muscle pain after taking western medicine), traditional Chinese medicine is also a safer treatment option; for atherosclerotic plaques detected at an early stage, insisting on long-term combined Chinese and Western medicine treatment can reduce and stabilize the plaques to a certain extent, soften the blood vessels, delay or even reverse the progress of atherosclerosis, and reduce the occurrence of acute cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events.
