What is facial palsy?

Facial palsy is a disease with crooked mouth and eyes as the main symptom, or what is commonly called a crooked mouth, and is called facial neuritis and facial nerve palsy in Western medicine. The crookedness of the mouth is obvious when speaking, and can also be clearly seen when crying or laughing to one side. If the patient is asked to close his eyes, he will find that one eye cannot be closed, no matter how hard he tries. If the patient is asked to frown, one side of the eyebrow cannot be lifted. Patients themselves may feel numbness on one half of their face, leak air when they puff their cheeks, leak water when they drink, and often stagnate between the cheeks of one side of their face when they eat. Also, because one eye cannot be closed, this eye always tears easily, especially when facing the wind. Some patients may have pain around the ears and hearing sensitivity. The onset of facial palsy is relatively rapid and sudden, and many patients find it after waking up from sleep. It is usually most common in winter and summer. The age of onset of facial palsy is also very wide, from 80 to 90 years old grandparents, down to a few months old baby. So, how does facial palsy occur? Studies have found that patients with facial palsy mostly have a history of facial cold, such as sleeping against the wind: an electric fan blowing hard against one side of the face, or an air conditioner with the temperature too low and the air outlet facing the face —— This is more common in the summer, and we call it wind-cold evidence. There is another kind of facial palsy patients, which occurs after a cold and fever, otitis media or gum swelling and pain, we call it wind-heat evidence. There are many people who blow fans and air conditioners on their faces in summer, and there are also many people who have colds and fevers, so why does facial paralysis occur after this and why does it happen to some people at all? This is a matter of personal constitution. There is a saying in Chinese medicine that “when the evil comes together, its qi must be weak”, meaning that the reason why evil can attack the body and cause disease is because the positive qi is weak first. That is to say, the body’s vital energy is weak, the defense ability is low, the external evil is easy to “take advantage of the weakness and enter”. If these two meridians are deficient, wind-cold or wind-heat evil will take advantage of the deficiency to invade the cheek, leading to the blockage of the meridians, the loss of nourishment of the tendons, and the onset of the disease. So, how can facial paralysis be treated? What is the prognosis? Generally speaking, early detection and treatment of facial palsy are more effective and most of them can be cured. The treatment focuses on eliminating inflammation, reducing edema, and restoring nerve function, and usually acupuncture with physical therapy has the best effect. At the same time of treatment, the face should avoid cold and wind, in the cold winter it is best to wear a mask or scarf; if in the summer, avoid the face to the fan or air conditioning, but also to avoid eating cold drinks ice-cream type. As one eye is not fully closed, dust can easily enter, so pay attention to eye cleanliness, and if necessary, eye drops can be ordered to prevent infection. Patients can do their own facial massage and hot compress at home, all of which can help the recovery of facial palsy.
