Soft skin tissue expansion is a landmark technological advancement in the field of plastic surgery. The technique involves surgically implanting a silicone rubber balloon, also known as a soft skin tissue expander, underneath the skin or muscle, and then injecting regular injections of sterilized saline into the skin, so that the skin tissue on the surface of the expander gradually expands and stretches as the balloon grows larger, in order to provide “extra” skin and subcutaneous tissue for repair of the defect or create a cavity for implantation of bone and cartilage and prostheses. Or, it creates a space for the implantation of bone, cartilage, and prostheses. Because skin expansion makes full use of the limited skin resources, no damage to the donor area, no new scar, the color, texture, sensation and function of the repaired skin and normal skin tissue are exactly the same, and its therapeutic effect is far superior to the traditional implantation, therefore, skin expansion has become one of the main techniques in plastic surgery. Skin soft tissue expansion can be used to treat: 1, scarring baldness of the scalp; 2, face and neck scars, pigmented nevi and defects; 3, scar contracture of the trunk and limbs and tissue defects; 4, organ reconstruction, such as nose, ear, breast reconstruction; 5, provide a source of skin flaps or implants.
