When you wake up in the morning and experience pain in the middle of your sternum, consider sternal chondritis more often than injury to the sternoclavicular joint as a secondary consideration. Sternal chondritis is an inflammatory reaction that occurs in the joint area of the sternum and the rib cartilage, and can be due to cold, trauma, strain, cardiac diseases, and patients who have undergone open heart surgery. Pressure pain in the chest wall and squeezing pain in the chest are the main manifestations on examination. The diagnosis can be clarified by whether the symptoms are relieved after local anesthesia block at the union of cartilage and bone, and most of the patients can be relieved spontaneously after a few weeks. If symptoms persist for a long time, corticosteroid injections may occasionally be required. Patients tend to complain of sternal pain, which can trigger anxiety and tension.
