The treatment of osteoarthritis is a stepwise treatment. For patients with mild early joint hyperplasia and only occasional joint pain, symptoms can be improved first by weight loss, joint warming, heat application, physical therapy, baking and microwaving. If further development occurs and joint hyperplasia and pain worsens when physical therapy is ineffective, medications such as ibuprofen, diclofenac sodium and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can be added to relieve painful discomfort. If the effect of drug treatment is not good, and if the hyperplasia is found to be more serious on radiographs, and if surgery has not been performed or is not desired, joint cavity injection can be used at this time. Generally, the joint cavity can be injected with sodium glacial acid or chitosan joint lubrication needle to lubricate the joint and nourish the joint cartilage. In most patients, joint pain is reduced after injection treatment, and joint movement is not heavy, painful, or stumbling. If the symptoms are more severe patients can have surgery. Surgery includes force line correction, arthroscopic surgery, and joint replacement, etc. Surgical treatment is usually chosen based on the severity of symptoms. At first, we can do osteotomy to correct the force line, called knee preservation surgery; we can also do arthroscopic surgery to remove the free body inside the joint to relieve the local symptoms; for more serious patients, we can also do unicondylar joint replacement, such as the wear of the articular cartilage on the weight-bearing surface, the medial wear alone or the lateral wear alone, and the patellofemoral joint is fine, we can do partial joint replacement, which removes the articular cartilage in that part and replaces it with a thin layer of metal underneath. For severe osteophytes with more than two compartments, a total knee joint replacement is required, where the upper cartilage and subchondral bone are partially removed, the lower side is replaced with metal, and the middle is padded to solve the problem.
