Why do I feel strained to speak with normal voice quality after thyroid surgery?

An important anatomical structure in thyroid surgery is the recurrent laryngeal nerve, which governs the movement of the vocal cords and is located immediately behind the posterior envelope of the thyroid gland. This may cause edema or affect the blood supply to the nerve, which may result in strained speech. However, this phenomenon will gradually disappear about 3 months after surgery as the edema subsides and the blood supply is restored.
