Preparation for Craniofacial Surgery

  1.Pre-operative craniosynostosis.
  Before the operation, the doctor will explain the purpose of the operation and post-operative complications to you, as well as sign the consent form for the operation, the consent form for anesthesia and the consent form for blood transfusion.
  Try to relax and be confident.
  Patients are nervous and fearful about the surgery due to their lack of understanding of the surgery. Family members should give encouragement and support, and let them visit successful cases who were hospitalized with the same disease at the same time to build up their confidence.
  Reasonable diet.
  Nutritious and easily digestible food should be given, quit smoking and alcohol abstinence from 10 pm before surgery to avoid aspiration by mistake during anesthesia.
  Surgical site skin preparation.
  The nurse will prepare the skin of the surgical area for you according to the surgical site. For general open surgery, all hair and pubic hair on the vulva should be shaved, nails should be cut, bathing and dressing should be done.
  For patients with pituitary tumors through the butterfly approach, nasal drops with hemp nasal drip and mouth rinse with Dobell’s solution will be started 3 days before surgery, and nasal hair will be cut the day before surgery.
  Other preparations.
  1.Blood preparation for intraoperative blood.
  2. Do skin test for antimicrobial and anesthetic drugs for intraoperative and postoperative use.
  3.If there are movable dentures, they should be removed to avoid losing them after anesthesia.
  4.Do not bring valuables or hand ornaments into the operating room, but give them to family members or nursing staff for safekeeping.
  2.Morning of cranio-cerebral surgery.
  1.Nurse will measure your blood pressure, pulse, breathing, body temperature, also shave your head again, if you have menstruation or feverish body temperature, please inform us in time.
  2.Please change into clean patient clothes prepared for you by the nurse and take off your own clothes (including underwear and underpants).
  3.Conduct urinary catheterization. After the above preparations, the nurse will give you the pre-operative injection and check that it is correct before you are sent to the operating room for surgery.
  3.After cranial surgery.
  Reclining position: before the anesthesia is awake after the operation, the nurse will take the pillow for you to lie flat and turn your head to the healthy side. After 6-8 hours after waking up, you can put pillows on your head. For your safety, restraint of limbs or additional bed stalls may be required in case of agitation.
  Airway management: Keep the airway open and the nurse will give you oxygen. You may feel uncomfortable when the tracheal tube (nasal cannula) is placed, and sometimes you may become agitated, so you need to restrain your limbs to avoid self-extraction. The tube should be removed only when you are awake or have a gag reflex.
  Diet management: After surgery, you need to strengthen nutrition, eat a high protein, high calorie, high vitamin diet, such as: lean meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, etc. Avoid eating spicy, hot, fried and fried food. For 1-2 days after surgery, give liquid, such as thin gruel, rice soup, etc., and then gradually give semi-liquid, such as noodles, soft rice, etc. For coma, nasal feeding or rehydration according to medical advice.
  Observation of drains and wounds: all kinds of drains should be fixed properly to prevent dislodgement, and when turning over, pay attention to the drains not to be twisted or folded, and should be lower than the head. After surgery, the wound should be closely observed for blood and fluid seepage, and if there is much blood and fluid seepage, the doctor should be notified in time to change the dressing.
