Amblyopia is mostly due to abnormal visual experience during visual development, resulting in the eye’s best-corrected visual acuity being lower than that of normal peers. In general, adult amblyopia is less likely to be cured. Patients can be corrected with the appropriate prescription depending on the presence of refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Adult amblyopia often exists since childhood and remains undetected until adulthood, in which case the treatment time has been missed and the possibility of cure is not very high. Amblyopia needs to be detected and treated early to avoid adverse effects on visual function. Adult amblyopia combined with refractive errors can be corrected with lenses to improve vision and quality of life.
