What does amblyopia masking therapy do?

The main purpose of masking therapy for amblyopia patients is to force the patients to use the amblyopic eye to see, so that the amblyopic eye can get sufficient and effective visual stimulation, thus promoting the development of visual function and improving visual acuity. Amblyopia usually develops in childhood, due to low vision in one or both eyes during the critical stage of visual function development due to various triggers, such as strabismus, high hyperopia, high astigmatism, refractive error, etc. The treatment is mainly used for patients with amblyopia in one eye to improve visual acuity. Masking therapy is mainly used for monocular amblyopia. By masking the good eye and forcing the amblyopic eye to be used to see, the development of visual function of the amblyopic eye can be stimulated and the visual center’s inhibition of the amblyopic eye can be lifted, so that the patient’s visual acuity can be gradually improved. Amblyopia masking therapy needs to be carried out under the guidance of an ophthalmologist.
