Problems associated with interferon therapy

Interferon has been used in the antiviral treatment of hepatitis B for more than 20 years. Interferon has four main biological effects, namely antiviral, antitumor, immunomodulatory and antihepatic fibrosis effects. Interferon mainly plays the role of inhibiting the replication of hepatitis B virus by regulating the immune response, while reducing liver inflammation and necrosis, promoting liver cell repair, and eventually slowing down the development of the disease and preventing the development of cirrhosis or even liver cancer. There are two main types of interferon used in clinical practice: ordinary interferon, which is injected every other day; and long-acting interferon, which is injected once a week. However, discontinuation of the drug should be based on the body’s response, i.e. normal liver function, HBVDNA negative, HBeAg positive converted to anti-HBe positive – complete response before considering discontinuation of the drug. Patients should remember not to discontinue the drug on their own. If the drug is discontinued improperly, it may cause virological rebound and aggravate the progress of the disease, and should be done according to the doctor’s recommendation. Side effects of interferon: 1. Flu-like syndrome. Fever, chills, muscle pain, headache, etc., nasal congestion, runny nose, dizziness, urinary urgency, etc., all of which can subside naturally within 24 hours. Influenza-like syndrome can be tolerated or disappear in the body as the number of doses increases. 2. Mental and neurological symptoms: fatigue, salivation, irritability, seizures, depression (some people even have suicidal tendencies), etc. 3, thyroid dysfunction, can cause estrogen level decline, lipid abnormalities. 4, hematopoietic system changes suppression of bone marrow, peripheral blood leukocyte decline, anemia and thrombocytopenia. Liver and kidney damage. 5.Induced autoimmune reaction can lead to the occurrence of autoimmune hepatitis. The more common renal damage caused by interferon is proteinuria. 6.Mild to moderate hair loss. Weight loss.
