The inability to urinate can be caused by many diseases, more common ones such as prostatic hyperplasia in elderly men, which causes bladder outlet obstruction due to the large size of the prostate gland, resulting in difficulty in urination and inability to urinate. For this condition, the diagnosis can usually be made through urological ultrasound, as well as bladder residual urine measurement. Usually, for inability to urinate caused by prostate enlargement, an indwelling catheter can be used to drain the urine and relieve the symptoms. When the symptoms of urinary retention are relieved, medication or surgery can be considered. Generally, if a patient has urinary retention, surgery is usually considered, such as transurethral electrosurgery of the prostate or prostate dilation surgery.
