Nuclear power, as a new clean energy source, is gaining attention under the dual pressure of energy shortage and environmental pollution. Compared to new energy sources such as wind, hydro, and solar, nuclear power plants occupy a much smaller area per unit of power generated, are a cleaner, more efficient source of energy, and have a higher degree of controllability of harmful substances.
However, there has been widespread concern about the safety of nuclear power plants, but current studies have not found an increased risk of leukemia from living near a nuclear power plant.
- In the 1990s, China conducted health surveys of residents around nuclear power plants, such as Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant, Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant, and Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant, which surveyed long-term residents in the tens of kilometers around nuclear power plants.
- The Committee on Medical Aspects of Radiation inEnvironment (COMARE) of the United Kingdom statistically analyzed data on the prevalence of leukemia in children under 5 years of age living near 13 nuclear power plants and found no increased risk.
