Herpes simplex is a viral infection of the skin. It has early symptoms, usually not at the site of the herpes, and may have prodromal symptoms such as general malaise, fever, or a feeling of fatigue. When an attack occurs, there may be erythema in the skin area of the attack, followed by clusters of blisters on top of the erythema, some of which may be larger and even accompanied by septic infection. There are 2 types of this herpes, type I and type II. Type I herpes is found around the mouth, nose, and eyes. However, type 2 herpes is usually found in the genital area and perianal area, and this type is a sexually transmitted disease.
