About the timing of cataract treatment

A friend took his father to the doctor yesterday.

The elderly man complained that he had good vision when he was young and had recently experienced significant vision loss. He had been diagnosed with cataract in a foreign hospital and requested surgery.

The examination revealed that the vision was 0.3, but the cataract was very mild.

What was the reason for this?

It turns out that cataracts in the elderly have just started and are in the process of development. At this time, some of the elderly will have refractive error due to the aging of the crystal. This situation does not need surgery for the time being, as long as a pair of glasses can be worn. After a period of time, it is not too late to have cataract surgery when the clouding of the crystal becomes obvious.

Family members ask: Isn’t it better to have cataract surgery as early as possible? Actually, it is not. It is better to have cataract surgery at a moderate level.

1. It is not recommended to do it too early. Because there are risks in any surgery. In addition, the implanted IOL is not as good as the “original” crystal of our body.

2. It is not recommended to do it too late. In the 70’s and 80’s, cataracts were emphasized to be done when they were “ripe”, but now the technology has been greatly improved.

Therefore, the timing of surgery should not be too early or too late, but just right.
