Currently, the proportion of scoliosis occurring in primary and secondary school students is on a significant rise. Most people believe that spinal disease is predominantly in the middle-aged and elderly, but clinical observations show that the age of onset of spinal disease is trending downward year by year, and that adolescents and even preschoolers are being threatened and harmed by spinal disease. Because children’s spines are more flexible, the underlying condition is often not easily detectable, often showing symptoms only at the age of 15 or so, and becoming a long-term condition by the age of 25. Statistics from many countries and regions show that 80 percent of “scoliosis” in middle-aged and older adults originated in early childhood. It is clear that attention should be paid to spinal health in childhood. A hospital recently conducted a random examination of spinal disorders, and the statistics showed that 70% of children suffer from scoliosis, and it is very common. According to experts, this is related to bad habits such as children’s school bags being too heavy and lying in bed reading books. At present, primary and secondary school students heavy homework, school bags are getting heavier, children’s physical exercise less and less, muscle ligament strength is not enough, long-term weight on a shoulder will directly affect the normal state and function of the spine. In addition, modern living conditions have improved, children’s physical development than in the past significantly taller, some of the desks and benches in schools still maintain the original height, not in a timely manner according to the child’s height changes to make corresponding adjustments. There are many causes of scoliosis, which can be divided into two main aspects: internal and external causes. 1, internal causes, Chinese medicine believes that children with spondylolisthesis and kidney-related. With the change in life and eating habits now, the air conditioner is turned on too much in the summer and blown for too long, resulting in lower spleen and stomach function and kidney deficiency, leading to skeletal and intervertebral disc lesions. 2, exogenous aspects, the school bag is too heavy is a causative factor that should not be ignored. Now elementary school students from second to fifth grade school bags generally up to 3 kg heavy, some reach 5 kg. In addition, the child’s daily bad habits, such as lying in bed reading, watching TV for a long time, playing games, etc., can cause spinal misalignment deformation. If scoliosis is too serious, it will not only bring great pressure to the child’s physiology and psychology, but also cause thoracic deformity, so that the thoracic cavity capacity is reduced, and in serious cases, the spinal cord and nerve roots will be compressed and eventually cause paralysis. When the child is standing upright, the two shoulders are not on a horizontal plane, the spine cannot be observed in a straight line from the back, the lumbar muscles on both sides are not symmetrical, the elbow joints of the two arms are not equal to the distance to the side of the body, these may be the performance of scoliosis. Babies should not sit too early, from childhood to develop a good sitting posture, sleep on a hard bed, do not sleep for a long time on a too soft bed or sofa to read books, watch TV, and strengthen physical exercise. In this way, the possibility of spinal disease in children can be controlled to a smaller extent. In short, children’s spine is not yet mature, the structure is not stable, prone to displacement of a part and cause scoliosis, but because of the tolerance of children’s spine, flexibility of the degree of inclusion, there may be no symptoms at the time, but over the years will cause permanent damage. Generally, idiopathic scoliosis of 20 degrees or less can be left untreated for close observation, and if it worsens more than 5 degrees per year, it should be treated with bracing. Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis with a first diagnosis of 30 to 40 degrees should be treated immediately with bracing because more than 60% of patients in this group will develop and worsen. Juvenile idiopathic scoliosis requires consideration of surgery in the following cases: (1) those with thoracic curvature greater than 40 degrees and thoracolumbar curvature/lumbar curvature greater than 35 degrees; (2) those who cannot be controlled with brace therapy and whose scoliosis is progressing rapidly; and (3) those with significant low back pain or symptoms of nerve compression.
