Advances in the diagnosis and treatment of functional constipation in children

Advances in treatment research For the treatment of FC, comprehensive treatment should be combined with individualized treatment. The aim of treatment for FC is not only to laxative and removal of fecal masses in the colorectum, but also to remove the etiology, improve dietary habits and dietary composition, restore normal gastrointestinal transmission and evacuation function, and improve fecal properties in order to restore normal defecation behavior [11]. It should be first distinguished whether FC is of the slow-transmission or exit-obstruction type, and then the appropriate interventions should be selected, but further research is needed regarding the treatment of FC in children, and the principles of individualization and multidisciplinary collaboration should always be noted in the treatment process. The treatment consists of two main aspects: first, the removal of fecal impaction as soon as possible to eliminate symptoms, followed by a series of sequential maintenance treatments. Some children with intractable constipation may require surgical intervention. In children with fecal impaction, a cleansing enema or a short-term stimulant laxative may be given to relieve the impaction and provide rapid relief. Curettage can lubricate the intestinal wall, soften the stool and remove the accumulated feces in the colorectum, and can be used to relieve symptoms in the acute stage, but long-term repeated use is not recommended. For children, soap solution enemas should be avoided.
