Normal body temperature of newborns

The normal body surface temperature of a newborn is 36.0-37.0℃, while the core (rectal) temperature should be 36.5-37.5℃. Neonatal thermoregulatory center function is not yet perfect, the body surface area is relatively large, the skin is also thinner, it is easier to dissipate heat, while the heat production response is poor. Therefore, the body temperature of newborns is slightly lower than that of normal adults. The normal body surface temperature of newborns should be 36.0~37.0℃, while the core temperature measured rectally should be 36.5~37.5℃. Because the ambient temperature of newborns after birth is lower than the uterine cavity temperature, and less heat production, more heat dissipation, etc., especially in premature babies, so newborns should pay attention to warmth, to prevent hypothermia, cold injury, etc.. Parents are advised to pay attention to the warmth of their newborns, and to consult a doctor if their body temperature is too low or too high.
