There is no clear standard for how many hours an infant should be fed formula, it should be evaluated in conjunction with the baby’s age, such as for exclusively breastfed newborns, it is recommended that they be fed on demand, and the amount of feeding should be appropriate so that the baby can sleep quietly for about 2~2.5 hours after breastfeeding, and the time will be gradually extended with the age of the baby increasing.
The number of breastfeeding times, intervals and the amount of each breastfeeding varies greatly among individuals, and should be based on the baby’s specific situation on-demand feeding. General newborns exclusively breastfeeding is recommended on-demand feeding is the most appropriate, formula-fed, day and night nursing intervals are similar, about 2 ~ 2.5 hours once, the second half of the night a little longer.
From 2 to 3 months of age, breastfeeding should be done 6 times a day, with the interval extended to 3.5-4 hours, and the second half of the night can sleep for 5-6 hours; from 4 to 5 months of age, breastfeeding should be done 5-6 times a day, and the second half of the night, in particular, can continue to sleep for 6-7 hours, without breastfeeding; from 5-6 months of age on, breastfeeding should be done 4-5 times a day, and breastfeeding should only be done once in the night at the most after going to sleep.
From 6 months of age onwards, after adding pureed food, the baby is fed 1 to 2 times a day with rice paste or porridge, so the amount of cow’s milk should not be increased each time; from 7 to 8 months of age onwards, daily breastfeeding can be reduced to 3 to 4 times a day, with no need for nighttime breastfeeding.
It is recommended to consult a specialist for guidance on feeding according to the baby’s condition.
