Tonsil and adenoids surgery is one of the common surgeries in ENT department, many patients always have vague knowledge about postoperative care, wound pain, postoperative diet, and matters to be noted after discharge are all confused, so in order to avoid some unnecessary accidents caused by improper postoperative patient care, let’s explain in detail the matters that patients should pay attention to after tonsillectomy. After tonsillectomy (including adenoidectomy and palatopharyngoplasty): 1. Postoperative pain in the pharynx and slurred pronunciation are normal, pain in the middle of the pharynx may be caused by anesthesia intubation and can be reduced by nebulization; pain on both sides of the pharynx may be caused by tonsillectomy, and serious patients may even have pain in both ears. If the pain is severe, the doctor in charge can be informed to use additional painkillers. 2. You can drink and eat 6 hours after the general anesthesia surgery. If you feel thirsty before then, you can ask the nurse to take a cotton stick dipped in water to moisten your lips and mouth. Avoid eating hard, hot or acidic food (such as melon, ribs, peanuts, yogurt, acidic juice, etc.) for 2 weeks after surgery. At first, you can choose cold milk, ice cream, cold broth, and then gradually transition to thin porridge, soft noodles, etc. At the same time, avoid eating with straw. 3. It is normal to have a lot of phlegm after surgery. Please spit out oral secretions gently and avoid coughing violently, blowing nose and swallowing vigorously. If the throat is too ticklish and it is difficult to suppress the coughing sensation, you can inform the doctor in charge to add cough medicine. 4. For children, it is normal to have a low fever after surgery, and the fever temperature usually does not exceed 38℃. If the fever and pain cause heavy discomfort to the child, the doctor in charge can be informed of the symptomatic treatment. 5.After adenoidectomy, children may have nasal congestion and increased runny nose, which can be relieved by nasal spray; adults may also have nasal congestion after tonsillectomy (or uvulopalatopharyngoplasty), which can be used when nasal congestion is present by purchasing “Dafenac” nasal spray from pharmacies. 6, 1 week after surgery due to wound edema, snoring may be more than before surgery, is a normal phenomenon, as the wound edema subsides, snoring will be reduced 7, after surgery children may also appear sleep open mouth breathing, the reason may be postoperative wound edema caused by poor ventilation, or habitual open mouth. You can purchase your own jaw bandage to correct children’s sleep open-mouth breathing after the wound edema subsides. 8.A small amount of blood sputum and nasal bleeding after surgery is normal. The peak period of postoperative bleeding is within 24 hours after surgery and 1 week after surgery, especially pay attention to reduce coughing and proper food intake during these two periods. When there is a small amount of bleeding in the mouth, please put ice water on the ipsilateral neck and hold off eating, and gradually transition from cold liquid food to cold semi-liquid food after the condition stabilizes. If the bleeding is heavy and persistent, please take a sitting position immediately (do not lie down), and then notify the nurse and doctor on duty. 9.Maintain oral hygiene, rinse your mouth with the mouthwash handed out after meals. 10.The uvula (“little tongue”) may swell after surgery, even like a small ball. It may cause foreign body sensation and affect swallowing. The symptoms will disappear when the edema subsides. 11.After uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, you may feel that food, especially soup and water, may flow back to your nose when swallowing, which is a normal phenomenon. When the wound edema subsides and the swallowing function is restored, the nasopharyngeal reflux can be improved and disappeared. 12.Sutures can be seen on the soft palate after uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, which are absorbable sutures and often cracked after 3 days of surgery, which is a normal phenomenon. If it does not affect you much, you can wait for it to fall off by itself. If it causes unbearable foreign body sensation, itchy throat, poor swallowing, etc., you can inform the doctor in charge to cut the suture short. Surgical methods: There are various methods of tonsil and adenoidectomy, but most tertiary hospitals currently use the leading low-temperature plasma surgical system at home and abroad. The basic working principle is that it will produce a certain temperature to cut the tissue when it is used. The operation time is short, less bleeding, safe without radiation, light postoperative pain and early feeding time.
