Notes for parents of children with Tourette’s syndrome

Tic disorder is a relatively common disorder among children and adolescents. A twitch is an involuntary, sudden, rapid, recurrent, non-rhythmic movement or vocalization with no apparent purpose, which cannot be restrained but can be controlled by the will for a short period of time. They include the following: 1) simple motor tics: blinking, eye rolling, nose squeezing, shoulder shrugging, etc.; 2) complex motor tics: jabbing movements, spinning, jumping, imitating others’ movements, obscene movements, etc.; 3) simple vocal tics: snorting, clearing the throat, barking, etc.; 4) complex vocal tics: repeating special words and phrases, repeating words and phrases spoken by oneself or others, obscene words, etc. So all forms of tics can be aggravated by stress, anxiety, fatigue, excitement, cold and fever, and all can be alleviated by relaxation and total devotion to something and disappear during sleep. Most children with tics are timid, introverted, and easily stressed. Parents should do the following: 1. Take the child to the doctor to rule out the influence of disease factors; 2. Prohibit the child from playing computer games or watching TV for long periods of time; 3. Purposefully allow the child to move more to relieve stress and relax; 4. Guide the child to learn to face stress and increase the child’s exposure to various environments; 5. Adjust their emotional state and remember not to Do not use language or even physical punishment to correct your child when he or she has tic symptoms; 6. Give your child medication and adjust the dosage under the guidance of a doctor, do not increase the dosage or stop the medication without permission; 7. Eat a light diet: In the recipes of these children, nutritious and easily digestible food cannot be missing, but high protein and high calorie ones should be equally limited. Eat more light, high-fiber vegetables and fruits, and avoid stimulating foods, foods rich in coloring and food additives, or drinking large amounts of caffeinated beverages.
