Early detection and treatment to avoid missing the best time for treatment

The mother of the child (a pseudonym), Ms. Feng, feels more and more wrong, the child just can not speak, but hearing is normal, know everything. Other children are basically learning to speak, but the two-and-a-half-year-old child is silent, constantly biting his own sleeve, dull expression, blank eyes, unconcerned about everything around him. Not long ago, Ms. Feng brought her child to the Child and Adolescent Psychology Clinic of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region People’s Hospital for examination. Wu Xin, director of the Child and Adolescent Psychology Clinic, pointed out that if a child is slow to speak, cannot meet people’s eyes, and behaves strangely, he or she should consider the possibility of autism and bring the child to the hospital for examination as soon as possible. Since 2006, the number of children with autism attending our child and adolescent psychology clinic has been increasing year by year, and the majority of children with autism are around 2-3 years old every day, which also indicates that parents now have a correct understanding of autism. However, based on the currently accepted prevalence rate of autism of 3 per 1,000, there are still many children who are not being seen or whose parents are not even aware of their child’s illness. The reason for the high rate of underdiagnosis and misdiagnosis of autism, especially in China, is the lack of social awareness of autism, which is often treated as a speech disorder, hearing disorder, intellectual disability and ADHD. At the same time, there are not enough professionals with formal training who have the ability to recognize autism in China. As a result, many autistic children do not receive early diagnosis and early intervention, and miss the best time for treatment before the age of 6. On the other hand, because of the late start of autism research in China, a perfect diagnosis, intervention, rehabilitation and education system has not yet been established. Children with autism generally face difficulties in rehabilitation and schooling, and most autistic children and their families are in a difficult situation of self-help and isolation. Autism often shows symptoms at the age of 1-2. In the past, the diagnosis could not be confirmed until the age of 3. Nowadays, most experienced experts can make a diagnosis before the age of 3. Some foreign experts can even diagnose autism at the age of 9 months. What exactly causes autism? Wu Xin, director of the Child and Adolescent Psychology Clinic, said that autism is a congenital disorder, also known as pervasive developmental disorder, and its cause is not clear. Wu Xin reminded that although there are many different manifestations of autism, what they all have in common is the presence of communication disorders, language disorders and stereotypical behaviors. Wu Xin added, “The American Academy of Pediatrics recently announced 13 newest characteristics of autism in children, of which lagging language skills and lack of interpersonal communication skills are the most direct outward manifestations. There is no specific treatment for autism, but it is mainly improved through rehabilitation. 3-6 years old is the best time for treatment, and the earlier it is detected, the better the situation will be after rehabilitation. If parents notice the following characteristics in their infant or toddler, it is possible that the child is suffering from autism. 1.When the infant stares at the parents or the person taking care of him, but does not show a happy reaction. 2. 2 months after birth, the child does not smile and reacts poorly to things around him/her. 3.At about 5 months of age, the child does not make communicative babbling sounds. 4.Can’t recognize his parents’ voice, and doesn’t respond when mom or dad calls his name. 5.Does not make eye contact with others. 6.No babbling sounds until after nine months. 7.Seldom cooperate with hand gestures before talking, such as waving small hands. 8.Holds something and repeats an action over and over again. 9.Can’t say a word at 16 months old. 10.Still can’t make babbling sounds at one week old, and doesn’t make any communicative gestures. 11.Can’t say two words at the age of two weeks.
