How soon after cataract surgery can I get an eye exam and glasses?

After cataract surgery and the implantation of a new IOL, the prescription of the eye will change from what it was before the surgery. In particular, patients who had high myopia or high hyperopia in the past will experience a significant decrease in their prescription after surgery. Generally speaking, in the early post-operative period of one or two weeks, as the eyes are in the process of recovery and medication, vision and prescription tend to be less stable and sometimes fluctuate, so premature optometry is not recommended. A small number of patients, due to special work needs or temporary surgery on one eye, can be fitted with temporary transitional lenses during the recovery period, and the approximate prescription can be consulted with the attending surgeon, but generally after one month the fine optometry will be readjusted and the lenses replaced.

Since the vast majority of patients are now undergoing micro-incision ultrasound emulsion surgery, the prescription is basically stable at one month to one and a half months. If the surgery has been successfully completed in both eyes, it is time to visit the hospital for an optometry. Most people improve their vision at a distance, such as walking and watching TV, after surgery, and at this time they need to have a pair of presbyopic glasses for reading books and newspapers. Some patients with high myopia, generally the doctor will set aside a certain degree of myopia, ranging from one hundred to three hundred degrees, at this time can be equipped with a pair of low-degree myopic glasses to see far. Other patients may have some astigmatism in combination with cataracts in the past. If astigmatism-correcting IOLs are not selected during surgery, astigmatic glasses can be used to further improve the best vision. If the eye conditions are suitable and a multifocal or adjustable near and far IOL is selected, then after the rehabilitation period, glasses are not needed in most cases in daily life, and only occasional glasses can be worn to assist in long reading or special cases.
